Admiral Westphal Elementary

September Updates

SEPTEMBER UPDATES

Orange Shirt Day – Admiral Westphal Elementary will be honoring Orange Shirt Day on September 30th. This is an opportunity for all staff and students to increase their awareness about the thousands of Indigenous children across Canada who were forced to attend residential schools.  Acknowledging this day provides an invitation for us to participate in reconciliation. Staff and students are encouraged to wear orange shirts on this day. Our teachers will spend time over the coming days to review the significance of this day with students.

Terry Fox Walk - September 30th is the 40th Anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. This year, we cannot do a whole school event, but individual classes, led by their teachers, are going to participate in activities to support cancer research and awareness. Each class will complete in a Terry Fox Walk during PE or recess in their designated play areas. If you would like to donate to cancer research, please consider making a donation on-line. If you wish to donate online, Income Tax receipts will be issued by the Terry Fox Donation directly to you by e-mail. Go to www.terryfox.org, click on Terry Fox School Run (along the top of the page), then click on Parents and “DONATE TO STUDENT/SCHOOL”. There will be a red button on that page that says “Donate to a student, click that and then search “Admiral Westphal” with the location “Nova Scotia.”

Breakfast Program - To ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to start their day with a healthy breakfast Admiral Westphal’s daily breakfast programming is now underway. Each day, we have a grab and go breakfast option available at the start of the school day. Students may enjoy breakfast items including cereal bars, yogurt tubes, fresh fruit, and cheese directly from their baskets situated on a cart just outside the entry doors.

Pizza Lunch - Next week, we will be sending home pizza order forms for those families who wish to order pizza from our vendor, Little Caesar's. Students will be able to order a small personal pepperoni or cheese pizza delivered to our school every Thursday. If you paid for pizza before last year's school closure and did not get reimbursed, we will not charge for this first order.  $20 per order for 6 weeks of pizza. We will be sending along the details next week, stay tuned!
